Woody Allen has been doing some of his best work in decades recently, finally freed from the need to make "Woody Allen movies." The taut, noir-inflected drama "Match Point" (2005) showed Allen finally taking chances on something new.

Perhaps inevitably, "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" indicates some backsliding into a bit of what Allen does worst.
