Arab League welcomes Syrian-Lebanese agreement on diplomatic ties

CAIRO, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- The Cairo-based Arab League (AL) on Friday welcomed an agreement reached by Syria and Lebanon to set up their diplomatic relations.

In a statement issued by the 22-member pan-Arab body, AL Secretary General Amr Moussa described the decision of the two neighboring countries as "an important historical step."

The AL chief said the agreement of the two sides to demarcate their borders and revive mechanisms to develop bilateral ties "are positive steps to help strengthen relations in the interests of the two countries."
