Article: Lee optimistic about State

Carl Lee has evidence that West Virginia State's football program is about to create a buzz.

"We have guys who are former starters for us, but now they're in backup roles," said Lee, the Yellow Jackets' third-year coach.

As State's recruiting has improved under Lee, incumbent first- teamers sometimes have been beaten out by more talented newcomers.

State was 4-7 in Lee's debut in 1996 and 5-6 last year.

The Jackets open the 1998 season at 7 p.m. Aug. 29 against West Virginia University Tech in the Regatta Bowl at Laidley Field.
