Their melodic mating calls have become one of nature's best known
soundtracks, but twitchers in Somerset fear the singing of the
nightingale is in danger of falling silent.
Ornithologists have recorded a big drop in the number of the
birds at Hinkley Point nature reserve which had been a favourite
haunt of the winged musical entertainers.
The reserve and nature trail, maintained by British Energy, runs
along the power station's A reactor and the woodland and scrub is a
haven for nightingales.
It is believed there were at least seven males in the area last
year, but in 2008, there a just two males left. It seems the birds
have spread their wings and swapped the Somerset levels for the
