Levy Mwanawasa, 59, the president of Zambia, whose criticism of
the political and economic crisis of neighboring Zimbabwe helped
break the traditional silence of African leaders toward one of their
own, died Aug. 19 at a hospital in Paris after a stroke.
Mr. Mwanawasa suffered a stroke June 29 at an African Union
summit in Egypt. He was flown to Paris for treatment July 1.
He had a reputation for integrity and fought corruption in his
country but never managed to lift the Zambian people out of crushing
poverty.
Mr. Mwanawasa was Zambia's third president since independence
from Britain in 1964 and was not bound by the liberation movement
