UN Security Council condemns military coup in Mauritania

UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- The UN Security Council condemned on Tuesday the recent military coup in Mauritania which overthrew the government led by President Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdallahi.

In a nonbinding presidential statement, the 15-member condemned "the Mauritanian military's overthrow of the democratically- elected government of Mauritania."

The council "opposes any attempts to change governments through unconstitutional means," the statement said.
