Search ends for 3 trapped in SW China coal mine collapse

KUNMING, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers on Wednesday called off the search for three workers trapped in a coal mine in southwest China's Yunnan Province where seven others were confirmed dead.

Provincial coal mine safety bureau experts said the gas density in the pit increased drastically and the carbon monoxide density was beyond the safety limit. This made it impossible for anyone to survive after two days.

Several fires still burned in the pit, generating heat, heavy smoke and plenty of carbon monoxide. The victims may have died of carbon monoxide poisoning, rescuers said.
