CHICAGO -- The Cincinnati Reds trudged into their "Miracle Mile"
hotel on Monday, Aug. 18, a whopping 21 1 / 2 games behind the
Chicago Cubs, the team they play the next three days in Wrigley
Field.
What's to play for? Why are they here? Did they bring shopping
lists from their wives and girlfriends? Should they go to Navy Pier
and forget Wrigley?
Major League Baseball says they can't slough off the rest of the
season. Games must be played and teams must show up, as scheduled.
OK, they have to be here. Now what?
The Reds begin a 10-day, ninegame trip tonight that also takes
them to Denver and Houston.
