When Betty George's home in Hull was demolished by German bombs during the Second World War, she and her family crossed the Humber to find refuge on the south bank.

Once away from the trauma of the blitz, their journey across the river saw them discovering a safer haven in New Holland.

And it was there Betty found a friendship which blossomed into lifelong partnership.

Now she and her husband, Roy Cook, have happily celebrated their diamond wedding.

Reminiscing over their years together, Roy, who hails from Goxhill, revealed how, because of the bombing on the other side of the river, Betty and her family had been staying with some friends in New Holland.
