Triggered by the 75th anniversary of the launch of Radio
Luxembourg, by John Abberley
To Those of us brought up with the BBC's gentlemanly tones, Radio
Luxembourg sounded like something from another planet.
"We are the Ovaltinees," sang seductive females. "For all that's
worthwhile, your radio dial...is on Radio Luxembourg," recited a
man's voice.
It was nothing like dear old Auntie.
Someone came on with advice on how to win the pools. There was a
quiz with cash prizes. If I remember rightly, the climax was the
pounds32 question, which was a mouth-watering sum.
All the time we were told we were listening to 208 metres on the
