There is no wall space left in portfolio manager Latika Thukral's
new suburban bungalow. In the past seven years, she has spent most
of her disposable income on contemporary Indian art, mirroring a new
investment trend among the upwardly mobile Indian middle class.
"People who know nothing about art are buying it. They come with
pockets full of cash to art galleries. There is art under their
beds," Thukral, 42, said Friday as she chatted with gallery owners
and artists at the opening of what is thought to be India's first
art fair.
