About 20,000 fewer poor children received school clothing vouchers
this year than last, and key Democrats are blaming the Republican
administration for cutting children off the program.
Last year, 42,000 children received the $100 voucher which allows
them to buy clothes before school starts, said Ann Garcelon, press
spokesman for the state Department of Health and Human Resources.
Garcelon told Sen. Jon Hunter, D-Monongalia, that 22,000 vouchers
were mailed out this month, but she said late Monday the number
wasn't definitive.
"I'm sure there are over 10,000 who would qualify for the clothing
vouchers who were cut off" because of a DHHR policy on Social
Security supplemental ...
