Sri Lankan gov't officials hail local election result
COLOMBO, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lankan government officials said
Sunday that the ruling party's comprehensive win in Saturday' s
provincial council elections was an endorsement of President Mahinda
Rajapakse's anti-terrorism campaign.
Rajapakse's United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) coalition won
both the elections in North Central Provincial Council and
Sabaragamuva Provincial Council held on Saturday.
In both councils, the UPFA garnered around 55 percent of the vote
while the main opposition United National Party (UNP) was reduced to
under 40 percent.
