Wind farm pressure drop kills more bats

Wind turbines kill more bats than birds - because of the sudden drop in air pressure which occurs near to the blades, scientists have said.

As bats use echo location to detect objects, they rarely fly into man-made structures, researchers at the University of Calgary, Canada, said.

But a study of bats discovered dead at power-generating wind farms found 90% showed signs of haemorrhaging consistent with 'barotrauma' caused by a drop in pressure, the scientists writing in Current Biology journal said.

Only half the dead bats studied at a wind facility in Alberta showed any signs of direct contact with the blades. Just 8% of those dissected and examined had external injuries from impact but no ...
