Running clashes in village follow alleged vehicle theft

WITNESSES are urged to provide police with information following rioting in a village at the weekend.

The running clashes were sparked by the arrest of aman for allegedly stealing a car and carrying out an assault, in Easington Colliery, County Durham, late on Sunday.

In the ensuing violence, five men were left needing hospital treatment, one for serious injuries, while police arrested four men suspected of involvement in the disturbance.

During the peak of the confrontation, involving two factions, combatants armed themselves with golf clubs, baseball bats and spiked pieces of wood.
