- Nearly 11 days since the Pirates signed first-round pick Pedro
Alvarez, the former Vanderbilt slugger still isn't in town. The
third baseman hasn't taken his physical and, of course, he hasn't
gotten the $6 million signing bonus the Pirates will pay him.
Pirates president Frank Coonelly is awaiting Alvarez' arrival. "It
needs to happen," he said. Alvarez's next move is muddled. Most of
the minor-league regular seasons end Sept. 1. "It's a matter of
where can we get him exposed to some competition pretty quickly
that's going to challenge him," Pirates director of minor-league
development Kyle Stark said. "Now, in terms of timing, we're not
sure it's going to be able to work out."
