This summer's Olympic Games have just come to a close, and we may
have just witnessed the greatest national coming-out party in
history.
With China spending close to an estimated $50 billion to host the
world at the XXIX Summer Olympics -- compared to the nearly $16
billion Athens spent four years ago -- it is obvious Chinese
officials viewed the games as their opportunity to change global
perceptions of their country for the better.
Much of the spending was geared towards upgrading the country's
infrastructure, such as a new airport terminal, subway lines, hotels
and improvements to water supplies, the sewage system and an air
