Unemployment in Lancaster County continued its steady climb in July, hitting its highest mark in five years.

The jobless rate rose to 4.1 percent from 4.0 percent in June, the state Department of Labor & Industry reported today, matching a level last seen in September 2003.

July's figure means the local rate has grown by nearly 1 percentage point over the past year, a sure sign of a declining economy.

Yet, compared to other communities, the county remains an oasis of work.
