D. H. EVERETT was one of the great practitioners and teachers of
chemical thermodynamics of the 20th century.
His fascination for chemistry began in the mid-1920s, whilst he
was a pupil at Stanley Road Primary School in Hampton, Middlesex,
where science was taught by a Mr Neville, who "lent" the inquisitive
young Everett a Bunsen burner, tripod, gauze and small quantities of
glass tubing for carrying out experiments at home.
Douglas Everett's father, Charles, was a captain with the
Middlesex Regiment in France during the First World War, and
subsequently returned to Hampton where he was a bus driver with the
London General Omnibus Company. His mother worked as a supply
