The Pirates have lost a lot of games this month, but this one
seemed to hurt the most.
"It's a tough game to lose," shortstop Jack Wilson said. "We were
right in it. We had one bad inning."
The Pirates came from behind time after time and seemed poised to
beat the Cubs, the team with the best record in baseball, and snap a
five-game losing streak.
But they ran out of steam.
The Cubs scored seven runs in the top of the eighth inning and
pulled away to a 14-9 victory over the Pirates on Tuesday night at
PNC Park.
It was the sixth loss in a row for the Pirates, tying a season-
high, and their 10th loss in their past 12 games. They are 7-17 in
August.
