Tropical storm threatens Haiti, Dominican Republic

SANTO DOMINGO, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- The seventh tropical storm of the Atlantic hurricane season is threatening to hit Haiti and the Dominican Republic, meteorology services of Santo Domingo warned Monday.

Formed Monday in Central Caribbean waters, tropical storm Gustav is a low pressure system off the southwest coast of Haiti, some 400 km from the Dominican Republic.

Gustav threatens to bring strong winds, electrical discharges and rains.

In the north of Haiti, from Port au Prince to the border with the Dominican Republic, authorities advised local people to maintain vigilance as the territory is deforested and vulnerable to landslides.
