Even the greenest of us are reluctant to give up the benefits of cheap air travel, according to an Exeter researcher.

Exeter University expert Stewart Barr told the Royal Geographical Society's annual conference that even the most committed environmentalists are largely unwilling to ditch low-cost air travel.

But Exeter's best known green campaigner, Exeter Friends of the Earth coordinator Maurice Spurway, said he was not an eco-hypocrite and did not use low-cost airlines.

He said: "My view is that it is impossible to stop climate change unless we all stop flying. It is one element but it is the kind of decision that has to be taken.
