Exeter Land Army girls who helped to feed Britain throughout the Second World War are to be recognised with their own special event.

An afternoon tea with the Lord Mayor in the ancient Guildhall is being organised as a way of compensating for a Government gaffe.

The girls, many now in their 80s, were recently honoured with a Government medal - but were upset that the accompanying certificate bore no name, other than the Prime Minister's.

It prompted Maureen Tythcott, of Mill Lane, Alphington, to send a letter of protest to the Echo - which was taken up by fellow former Land Army girl, Margaret Branch.

She contacted the city's Lord Mayor, Councillor Paul Smith, and he has snapped into action
