A team of Westcountry scientists have helped deal a lethal blow
to the theory that Neanderthal man became extinct because he was
less intelligent than the modern human.
Paleontologists from the University of Exeter, Southern Methodist
University, Texas State University and the Think Computer
Corporation, have shown that early stone tool technologies developed
by our ancestors were no more efficient than those used by
Neanderthals.
The findings, published this week in the Journal of Human
Evolution, debunk the theory that Neanderthals were more primitive
and were overrun by Homo sapiens - a view that has been held by
archaeologists for more than 60 years.
