HOLY NAMES HIGH SCHOOL -- one of the first high schools in Oakland -- began educating girls in the 1860s at the school's first location, the marshy shores of Lake Merritt.

This year, the high school and its sister institution, Holy Names University in the Oakland hills, are commemorating 140 years of education in the East Bay.

Known then as the Convent of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, the school was founded by a contingent of young nuns from Montreal, the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary.
