VENICE FILM FESTIVAL Machan ***
A PACKED audience cheered Full Monty producer and British
resident Ugo Pasolini's first feature as director at the Venice
Festival over the weekend.
In fact, Machan, made in Sri Lanka with a local cast, has proved
just about the most popular film in the festival so far.
With echoes of The Full Monty, which was about the perils of
unemployment, it follows a disparate group of Sri Lankan workers
fighting against endemic poverty. Their attempts to reach Europe
seem hopeless. But they refuse to give up.
