Prisoners at Exeter jail have been refusing to go to court in
case they lose their beds.
A number of inmates are understood to have told their lawyers
that they wont turn up because they don't want to return to jail to
find someone else in their cell.
On Friday, Exeter Magistrates' Court heard 34-year-old Stefan
Kennerk had been due to appear there to face burglary charges.
But his lawyer Gareth Owens told the bench: "He is not here. He
refuses to come out of his cell at the prison. If he leaves his cell
he might lose his bed by the window and he doesn't want to lose
that. He is not going anywhere."
Kennerk is on remand at the overcrowded Exeter prison.
