WOOSTER -- In the political arena, no other early resident of the
town achieved prominence equal to that of Martin Welker.
Welker, who came to Wooster late in life, was born in Knox County
April 21, 1818. One of a large family, Welker's father of German
descent had few resources to educate his children. This meant that
Welker had to rely almost exclusively upon his own resources --
which included neither money, influence nor friends.
His education consisted of a few years' instruction in a log
cabin schoolhouse, but as a result of this he developed a powerful
inclination for books and the acquisition of knowledge.
