NEW YORK -- Center fielder Aaron Rowand texted in a few hundred
votes for himself, but he knew he didn't have the statistics to win
the Internet ballot for the final All-Star spot.
Milwaukee's Corey Hart prevailed over Rowand, the Mets' David
Wright, the Phillies' Pat Burrell and the Astros' Carlos Lee.
The Giants believe that Rowand's value goes far beyond his
slugging percentage, though -- especially as he helps to police a
room with nearly a dozen rookies.
He is trying to teach them how to win, how to absorb losses and
how to compete on a nightly basis. After shutout losses Tuesday and
Wednesday at Shea Stadium, Rowand acknowledged that his frustration
had reached a season high.
