Article: School clothing program to grow: About 30,000 more youngsters to get clothing vouchers

Gov. Cecil Underwood's move to restore a state program that provides school clothing to poor children apparently will significantly expand the effort.

"I believe that we must assure that these fragile children are not forgotten in our transition from welfare to work," Underwood said this morning.

Nearly 30,000 more children are expected to qualify for $100 school clothing vouchers under changes made by the state Department of Health and Human Resources.

The changes will double the cost of the 24-year-old program, from $2.9 million as of August to $5.8 million, and will be financed by a separate federal block grant.
