A Charleston woman who killed two of her husbands will probably
kill again if allowed out of prison early for the murder of her
latest mate, a Kanawha Circuit judge concluded Friday.
Judge Herman Canady sentenced Louise Burks to a 45-year term, the
maximum penalty allowed by law for the second-degree murder of
husband Larry Burks.
The sentence includes a five-year penalty because Burks is a
repeat offender. Burks was convicted of voluntary manslaughter in
1986 for killing husband Alexander Callen.
Canady cited evidence that Burks seems attractive to abusive men,
has trouble with alcohol, and turns to violence to solve her
problems.
