IN MANY LAWFUL, HELPFUL WAYS, RELIGION AND PUBLIC SCHOOLS MIX

Some say religion and public schools should never mix. This belief is often supported by the 1962 and 1963 U.S. Supreme Court decisions, Abington v. Shempp and Murray v. Curlett, banning prayer and devotional Bible readings in public schools.

However, there is another part of these rulings we often forget. The court also affirmed that public schools are legally free and even expected to teach about religion. The book "American Public School Law" states in regard to these cases, "The Court did point out, however, that the study of the Bible and religion, as part of a secular program of education for their literary and historic values, would not be unconstitutional."
