Article: Martinez residents to vote on $50 annual school parcel tax

MARTINEZ -- After a heated debate, a divided Martinez Unified School District board on Monday approved placing a $50 parcel tax on the November ballot.

John Fuller cast the lone no vote, but Kathi McLaughlin made it clear she was unhappy the board decided to go with a flat per parcel tax rather than a rate based on the square footage of the parcel.

"It's not something I think is an equitable tax in a town like ours where you have parcels that go from 1,700 square feet to 7,000 square feet," she said.

Fuller downplayed the district's financial woes and said he was concerned that no one from the community had volunteered to run the parcel tax campaign.
