Rookies are supposed to arrive at AT&T Park early. Giants center
fielder Aaron Rowand almost always beats them there.
His wrists are taped, his bats are prepped and his favorite
sweatbands are stretched around his Popeye forearms. They feature
the skull logo of his favorite comic book hero, "The Punisher."
Which is exactly what Giants hitting coach Carney Lansford fears
Rowand has done to himself this season.
"He hits too much," Lansford said. "I try to tell him to back
off."
Rowand hasn't listened. He was hitting .342 as late as June 2, a
statistic all the more impressive because he played with a fractured
rib for most of April and May.
But since June 2, he has struggled to a .233 average ...
