SELDOM have motorists had a rougher ride. A new report this week,
called Priced off the Road, shows that in the past decade the cost
of insuring, servicing, taxing and fuelling a car has outstripped
the rate of inflation by 34 per cent or [pounds]608.
It now costs motorists an average [pounds]2,393 a year to keep a
car on the road whereas if costs had stayed in line with inf lation,
drivers would only be paying [pounds]1,787.
According to the report by uSwitch, car maintenance costs 78 per
cent ([pounds]1,051) more than in 1997 while car insurance has
outstripped inflation by 29 per cent, increasing premiums from
[pounds]311 to [pounds]535 a year. The cost of an MOT has leaped to
[pounds]50 ...
