Two community patrol vans fitted with CCTV cameras will monitor
Exeter's streets seven days a week for the first time.
The cameras will continuously record while the vans are in use to
capture evidence which could be used in prosecutions.
Council leaders claim the vans will act as a deterrent against
crime and anti-social behaviour.
But civil liberty organisations have expressed concern over the
increasing use of surveillance.
Kevin Mitchell, the city council's lead councillor for community
and environment, said: "The new cameras will greatly assist the
work of our community patrollers.
"They can pinpoint individuals engaging in illegal activity, help
