Article: Some hospitals back off on birth announcements

Central Maine Medical Center could soon stop announcing one of the most celebrated events at the hospital: the arrival of a new baby.

In an effort to prevent newborn kidnappings, the Lewiston hospital is looking at changing the way it deals with public birth announcements. Currently, parents must give their approval in order for a birth announcement to be sent to a local newspaper or posted on the hospital's Web site. Newspaper announcements include the newborn's full name and hometown, as well as the full names of the baby's siblings, parents and grandparents.
