A group of Topekans who visited Des Moines this past week found a community that has improved its downtown during the past 15 years.

Investments by the public and private sector have added bicycle trails along its rivers, a baseball stadium for the Iowa Cubs and new restaurants and nightclubs in Des Moines' historical Court Avenue Entertainment District.

"What impressed me was the level of cooperation between government and the private sector," said Richard Wienckowski, chief financial officer of Hill's Pet Nutrition, and a member of the group that went to Des Moines. "They were all singing from the same hymn book."
