Tastes are slippery things for which there is, notoriously, no accounting. Ricky Gervais, however, is to everybody's taste. Last weekend, The Office, the deadpan comedy that he created and in which he stars, scooped the British Comedy Awards. Gervais himself walked off with the award for best actor, in recognition of his astounding portrayal of the vile and pathetic David Brent, manager of the Slough branch of a wholesale paper merchants, Wernham Hogg, and self- proclaimed comedy genius.
