She came here in 1698 and said of Exeter that ... "the market for meat, fowls, fish, garden things and dairy produce takes up three whole streets, besides the large market house ..." This was presumably somewhere at the heart of the city.

This was presumably somewhere at the heart of the city.
How things have changed! Now both the farmers' market and the
visiting continental markets are relegated to either Sidwell Street
or the top of Fore Street. I wonder what our continental friends ...
