CASTRO VALLEY -- If he wanted to, Alan Kreuzer could dump out the several hundred thousand pieces of change he owns and swim in them, much like Scrooge McDuck with his vault of gold coins.

But the chances of that actually happening are slim. The currency he possesses is not your typical parking meter filler. His coins are from a different time -- a time, he says, when coins were made with more effort.

"The coins made today are just butt ugly. There's just nothing there," he says. "But when you take something like an Indian penny or early gold "... it's just beautiful."
