- First baseman Adam LaRoche, who's arbitration-eligible, met
with manager John Russell and general manager Neal Huntington on
Tuesday afternoon. LaRoche, 28, is making $5 million this season,
and the Pirates control him through 2009. Huntington said contract
talks will resume after the season. The first-year GM expects
LaRoche to be the Pirates' starting first baseman in the future.
"Time will tell," Huntington said. "But as we pencil our club
forward, Adam is the guy that we pencil in there." With no one ready
in the farm system, the Pirates have few options. They could return
Steve Pearce (.231, 1 HR, 11 RBI) to first base, re-sign free agent
