Article: Schaaf pushes nuisance ordinance ; Buchanan County wants action

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Another St. Joseph-area entity is looking to weed its way into the nuisance business.

Rep. Dr. Rob Schaaf, R-St. Joseph, went before a legislative committee Wednesday to seek support for a bill that would give Buchanan County the authority to order residents to clean up their properties.

Dr. Schaaf said the Buchanan County Commission asked him to file HB 13551 in response to a growing problem of county residents leaving large amounts of debris in their yards.

With the ability to enact what is known as a nuisance ordinance, Buchanan County could step in and charge for the removal of rubbish, trash, lumber, junk cars or equipment from their yards.
