Article: Buchanan County Jail population decreasing

The population at the Buchanan County Jail has dipped to its lowest level in years, a stark change from even a few months ago when officials worried about housing too many inmates.

Last week, inmate population at the jail hovered around 160. The jail, housed inside the Law Enforcement Center, can accommodate up to 212 inmates with the recent addition of bunk beds, but is meant to house about 136.

The population has been as high as around 230.

The persistent high population prompted a meeting between officials in September to discuss ways to alleviate the problem without a costly jail expansion that the County Commission says isn't a possibility.
