Mary Jane Fisher, 90, who was called the Helen Thomas of the
insurance trade press, died Sept. 14 of chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease at the Chevy Chase House retirement home in
Washington.
Mrs. Fisher, Washington correspondent for National Underwriter
publications from 1976 to 2001, was almost as much an institution in
Capitol Hill insurance circles as the better-known wire service
reporter Thomas was at the White House.
Mrs. Fisher was a reliable presence at the media table during
congressional hearings or legislative markup sessions when the topic
was employee pensions, benefits, retirement issues, health
insurance, Medicare or property and casualty regulations.
