Devon County Council's debt now amounts to pounds900 for "every
man, woman and child in the county", Exeter City councillors have
claimed in the latest row over a shake-up of local government.
Several Labour councillors say the county council has
"mismanaged" spending, resulting in pounds614 million of debt - but
county chiefs have dismissed the claims as "nonsense" and say that
borrowing to fund "major investments" is under control.
Exeter's Labour leader, Pete Edwards, says the county has run up
"massive" debts and people would be better served by an Exeter
unitary council rather than the county council proposal, which would
see Devon's district and county council structure dissolved ...
