Article: Would you like to see the city centre free of cars? National Car Free Day today promotes using public transport

IF you thought the traffic on the Kingston Bridge and around the city centre seemed lighter than usual today - relax, you didn't imagine it.

It was Car-Free Day at work.

The event, which last year involved nearly 2000 towns and cities in 38 countries across the globe, calls on motorists to leave their cars at home in favour of bikes, trains and buses.

Organised by the Environmental Transport Association, it seeks to highlight alternatives to car travel, pedestrians' and cyclists' rights, and the need for more and better public transport.

Each day, more than four million people in Britain commute less than three miles by car. And in 2005 there were almost 34 million vehicles on British roads ...
