KINSHASA, Congo (AP) - Congo's new president, sworn in Friday 10
days after the assassination of his father, vowed to renew this war-
weary nation, promising free elections, a liberalized economy and
the deployment of U.N. forces to oversee an often-ignored peace
agreement.
Joseph Kabila, who is in his late 20s and is a mystery to most of
his people, addressed this sprawling nation for the first time,
saying the restoration of peace and building of democracy were among
his foremost challenges.
It remained to be seen, however, how he would implement his
promises, many of which were also repeatedly made - and broken - by
