Depression is a disease that is more common than most of us
realize, but one that is treatable.
Each year depression in many different forms affects more than 19
million Americans of all ages, races and ethnic groups.
For unknown reasons, about twice as many women as men suffers
from depression. But even though it's treatable 80 percent of the
time, only about a third of those who have depression seek
treatment.
Studies have shown that if you have one episode of depression,
your chances are 50-50 that you will have another. The elderly are
at particular risk, too, as they face greater health problems and
loss of loved ones.
The most serious aspect of depression is the possibility of
