When her niece washed Rose Brillhart's hands in a gesture of love
and humility, the aunt began to cry.
"There is such unconditional love. It's a very humbling
experience," Brillhart said, as her niece, Jan Feldman, 18, hugged
and kissed her.
Brillhart was Feldman's "companion" Sunday for the Adults with
Disabilities Retreat at Camp Albrecht Acres, sponsored by the Office
of Special Needs of the Archdiocese of Dubuque. Some 80 volunteers
and nearly 70 retreatants with a variety of physical and mental
disabilities attended the two-day event.
The mutual hand-washing was a reflection of the traditional Holy
Thursday feet-washing ceremony that will occur in many churches
